A true ORIGINAL Twirly Girl and Grande Dame, this is Shirley!
How did you find Twirly Girls?
I met Bel through Club Sport in Pleasanton. She taught a “Femme Fatale” class around Valentine’s day one year. We learned some chair moves, wall action, floor work and some introductory to pole. It was so fun and I left with a real good feeling about pole. Shortly afterwards, Club Sport was promoting pole fitness by offering a free month and $49 thereafter monthly classes. What a deal! Why not? Bel was so fun and the other girls became my friends.
How long have you been a Twirly Girl?
Off and on for about three years. This year, I really got into pole dancing and took unlimited classes. I think I advanced more this year than any other time. I have gotten much stronger.
Did you pole dance before becoming a TG?
No. I was one of those conservative and shy Asian women. Pole dancing was the furthest thing on my mind. However, I am open to most anything so why not try pole dancing. Bel made the class comfortable and non threatening. She dimmed the lights and played great dance music. She taught us how to move and look. Everyone was in the same boat and I along with my classmates lost inhibition. It was a positive experience because we would cheer each other on when we were able to do something.
Which class(es) do you take? Who is your instructor?
Bel is the Chief Instructor and most of my classes are from her.
Which move were you most excited to nail?
The first year, I was thrilled to be able to climb the pole. In my second year, I learned to invert. My most challenging move this year was the Gemini and Scorpio. Now I am working on V split and Jasmine. By the end of the year, I would like to nail cross ankle release and “the Swan”.
I took Jamilla’s workshop, Liz’ Hawaiian Twirl, Sarah’s Lap Dance class and Tricks are for Chicks classes from Marilyn and Shelley. Most recently i took 2 sessions of group classes with David Owens. I enjoyed them all because there is always something new to learn from each instructor.
Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?
I like dancing barefoot because I have better control.
What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?
Adele “Someone like You” and “Set Fire to the Rain”
What is your guilty pleasure?
Chocolate and ice cream. Ben and Jerry’s Chocolate brown fudge is my favorite.
