How long have you been teaching at Twirly Girls?
I’ve been teaching at TG since February of this year, and am so happy to finally have a pole HOME. And this month–December–I am celebrating 6 years of teaching pole!
How long have you been pole dancing?
I’ve been pole dancing since January of 2008, so almost 7 years. I started with a sensual dance class, where they also taught us one twirl. I was instantly hooked and haven’t looked back since.
Which move were you most excited to nail?
This goes back many years, but I think it has to be superman. I didn’t think there was any way I was getting into that position! My dear friend Freya from Brassy Butterfly in Portland gave me the cues I needed to make it happen–and I use the same ones today when I teach it. It’s one of my favorite moves to teach, too. I love to see how excited students get when they first do it!
Which move is your nemesis?
Knee hold. It’s not really a nemesis; it’s something I flat-out refuse to do. The pain!! Each time I’ve tried, I’ve had a bone bruise for months. SO not worth it.
Which pros and workshops have been your favorite?
My favorite hands-down has always been Marlo. I’ve done probably a dozen workshops, classes, and privates with her, and I always take away so many interesting transitions and moves that work for me and my students. Having no formal dance training, I also really love learning choreographed routines and transitions that bring different styles to the piece: Phoenix Kazree, Michelle Stanek, and Sergia are some favorite teachers that come to mind.
Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?
I definitely prefer heels. My style has always been slinky sexy–my nickname IS Dr. Sultry after all–and heels just go so well with that. I’ve been recovering from a torn meniscus in my knee for about 14 months, and am just now starting to be able to wear heels again without pain.
What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?
I have three favorites that have always gotten me going, for years. Slow Dancing in a Burning Room (although I HATE John Mayer usually!), and 2,3,4 by Joneine Zapata. And the first song I ever performed to always makes me move–So Hott by Kid Rock!
What is your guilty pleasure?
I have to pick one?! OK. Chocolate. I eat good, organic very dark chocolate every single day. But I’ll eat any chocolate: See’s assortments, crappy Russell Stover, you name it!
