March 2014 Twirly Girl of the Month: Christine!

How did you find Twirly Girls?

I found out about TG’s about a year before I actually joined…. I saw a flyer at a downtown festival in livermore, and it so intrigued me that I could not stop thinking about it !

How long have you been a Twirly Girl?

I’ve been with TG’s for 2 years now!  I’ve always been in fitness from gymnastics in high school, aerobics in the 80’s, and bodybuilding in the 90’s…. Pole has been the best of all!

Did you pole dance before becoming a TG?

I did start taking pole lessons right before I joined TG ‘s….. A friend of mine who is the singer in an 80 ‘s rock tribute band’s girlfriend taught classes, and since I knew both of them from going to his shows, I felt safe and comfortable starting there, as I really didn’t know what to expect!  But I had to drive to SF on Friday evenings and it was a hassle, so I looked for a studio closer to me….. Bel was so friendly and welcoming, I instantly felt like it was the right thing for me!

Which class(es) do you take?  Who is your instructor?

I currently take Friday triple T’s with Bel, as my work schedule isn’t consistent except for Friday being off.  I was in Jades PoleEmotion class before , which was so fun and sensual!  I learned to walk in heels and lap dance!!  I’ve also had the pleasure of make up class with AJ’s invert class….. He is so amazing and an exceptional instructor, as well as being one of the nicest persons I’ve ever known !!

Have you taken any workshops?  Which was your favorite?

One of the fun workshop’s I’ve had was when Jade taught the Lioness class, sexy and fun. ( but hard on the knees !) lol

Which trick were you most excited to nail?

I’d say my first cross ankle release!

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

I love to dance in heels, but most of my training has been barefoot….. Heels feels so much sexier!!

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

Wow, my favorite song to dance to ??  So many….. But right away I have to say  “girls girls girls” by Mötley Crüe !

What is your guilty pleasure?

Guilty pleasure…… Well, having raised 6 beautiful daughters, and grandma to 9 wonderful grandkids, gone to college and back to college while trying to be a full time mommy…… I give so much of myself and energy to them and my career…. I provide women’s health care, and deliver babies at San Joaquin General Hospital which is a county hospital for the under served.  I also am an Angelic Reiki Master….. My healings are always free for those in need.  Given the professional demands of my job, and need to be a responsible parent and grandma ….. When I can, I go to rock concerts, where I am free to let the sexy out and let go and have fun!!  Very fun and therapeutic!!

February 2014 Twirly Girl of the Month: Janette!

How did you find Twirly Girls?

It was on a whim one day that the thought of trying a class in pole dancing might be fun for someone in her 50’s…and was it even possible? So I googled Pole dance studios and saw some of the classes TG offered were geared towards older women. So I decided to give it a twirl!

How long have you been a Twirly Girl?

It has been 2 years and 2 months since I signed up for my first monthly series of classes. I signed up with only the intentions of learning very basic pole dancing moves. I made it very clear to Bel I would never perform and I wasn’t cut out to do tricks.

Did you pole dance before becoming a TG?

No, I never ever even touched a dance pole before.

Which class(es) do you take?  Who is your instructor?

Pole Emotion with Jade

Triple T’s with Bel

Dance Lab with AJ

Sexation with Jade

and when I can, I will jump into AJ’s basic inverts

Which move were you most excited to nail?

Heck, I was most excited when I was just able to do a basic invert a couple of months ago. Surprisingly I’m still pushing myself to learn more tricks.

Have you taken any workshops?  Which was your favorite?

Yes, belly dancing was my favorite!

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

Both, barefoot, I am more secure. Heels, I feel sexy until I trip!

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

At this very moment you know it well, Crystallize by Linda Stirling.

What is your guilty pleasure?

I have 3, fashion, travel and my biggest guilty pleasure of all is watching baseball especially my SF Giants!

January 2014 Twirly Girl of the Month: Jade L!

How did you find Twirly Girls?

I found twirly girls on yelp. My best friends and I wanted to take a pole dancing class for fun so we did a taster class with Grace and I became addicted.

How long have you been a Twirly Girl?

2 years at the end of the month

Did you pole dance before becoming a TG?

No but I have a background in dance, gymnastics, and cheerleading. Pole dancing seemed like a way to use all my previous training and challenge myself.

Which class(es) do you take? Who is your instructor?

Currently I live in Vegas so whenever I’m back I drop into whatever classes I can make it to. I’ve been helping out with Bel’s friday morning classes for the month of December and taking a few of AJ’s classes but I started out learning from Grace and have taken class from Jade and Sean Michael as well.

Which move were you most excited to nail?

I was super excited to nail the Jade Splits and most recently twisted grip Ayesha

Have you taken any workshops? Which was your favorite?

Yes. I’ve taken workshops from Philip Deal, Alethea Austin, and Evgeny Greshilov. Evgeny’s workshop for contemporary pole at Pole Expo was my favorite because it allowed me to use my dance background and I love his choreography

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

I usually dance barefoot but dancing in heels is fun

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

I love slow contemporary songs. My favorite is still Stay by Rhianna but I’m currently choreographing to Say Something by A Great Big World

What is your guilty pleasure?

My guilty pleasure other than dance is Jack Daniels Whiskey and Country Music

December Twirly Boy of the Month: SeanMichael!

How did you find Twirly Girls?

In November of 2012, Nadia Sharif came up to NorCal for a workshop tour just off of her California Pole Dance Championship win. I scheduled a private with her at Twirly Girls through Lori. I didn’t really know anything about the studio or the community but after my private lesson, Bel and Lori took me to lunch and Bel asked me to come teach then and there and three months later, that’s exactly what I did.

How long have you been a Twirly Boy?

Basically a year (The first time I came to the studio was 11/24/12 for my private with Nadia)

Where else have you pole danced?

I started at Kinetic Arts Center thanks to my then co-worker, now amazing life companion, Lizzie. I also took Shelly’s spinning pole class at Phoenix where I developed my intense passion around spin. As my students will attest, one of my favorite phrases that I say almost constantly as if it’s brand new life changing information is “The faster you spin, the easier it is.”

Which class(es) do you teach?

I started off teaching “Tricks, Twirls, and Transitions” then added a new class to the lineup called “Inverted World.” We focus on inversions of all sorts and finding ways in and out of them. Our other big focus is building strength for inversions through reversed movement with the aid of gravity. I hope this all sounds very conceptual and space themed because I love themes.

Which moves have you been most excited to nail yourself, and which is your favorite to teach?

I came into this world of pole with zero body awareness, pitiful flexibility, and arms and hands so weak I woke up for months curled up in pain. Pole has not been a cakewalk for me. I love it because it has challenged me to become conscious of how much my body is capable of and encouraged me to use it while I can. That being said, every time I find a new ability I get the same high as my very first spin. There are some things that took me much longer to learn than others (toothbrush twist-off which I consider one of the harder and most labor intensive skills that I’ve conquered) and some that I accidentally happened upon and took zero finessing (like putting my foot on my head while hanging from my elbow.)

As far as teaching, I have this obsession with getting my students into their pole handstands. The pole community can be very quick to judge moves as strength, flexibility, etc. and then relegate those movies to specific gender representations (masculine = strong, feminine = flexible) so I like to mess up all those rules and teach my girls that they’re all capable of the pole handstand, one of the most iconic, liberating, and impressive moves available to us.

Which workshops have been your favorite?

My first workshop ever was a brass monkey intensive with Philip Deal. I’ll never forget it because I was awful and he kept pushing me and by the end of that day I was bleeding, and sweating, and bruised, and cramping, and I finally knew I wanted to compete. Not because I was proud of my abilities (I certainly didn’t get into a brass monkey without a spot that day) but because I realized how committed I was to this form of expression that I was falling in love with. I also trained privately with Phoenix Kazree while she was in SF with her Lion King tour (and AJ joined us once for maybe the most fun workshop of all!) which was the most transformational experience of my dance journey thus far.

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

I LOVE dancing in heels. Seriously, it ignites the sexy in me. I have only done it in public once and it will likely never become a serious part of my repertoire due to the lack of mobility I feel (I can’t do a cupid!) but I do love it.

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

I’m ashamed to admit that I haven’t been freestyling at all lately due to performance song requirements but I can tell you that my first favorite song to dance to was “Immature” by Björk.

What is your guilty pleasure?

My guilty pleasure in life is eating pad see ew from the Thai place down the street at 1:00 am in my bed. My guilty pleasure in pole is making my students spin. From their elbows. Oh, how they loathe it but it’s so much fun!!! : P

November Twirly Girl of the Month: Kallie!

How did you find Twirly Girls?

I was at a bar with a friend and the bartender got on the pole and showed us a few moves. I decided I could not let myself be shown up by a bartender so I googled pole dancing studios in the area. Twirly Girls had the best reviews, naturally.

How long have you been a Twirly Girl?

A little over a year.

Did you pole dance before becoming a TG?

Nope but I always loved to dance.

Which class(es) do you take?  Who is your instructor?

I take Inverted World with Seanmichael. I also like to pop in to the Tuesday evening classes with Bel.

Which move were you most excited to nail?

I’m really excited about the twist-off move Seanmichael is working on with us. I haven’t quite nailed it but it’s a work in progress.

Have you taken any workshops?  Which was your favorite?

I took a workshop with Josiah “Badazz” Grant. I absolutely loved it, his energy is contagious!

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

I prefer barefoot but heels are fun every once in a while.

Young and Beautiful by Lana Del Rey.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Red wine and books by Dan Brown.

October Twirly Girl of the Month: Tricia!

How did you find Twirly Girls?

I used to take Pilates at the Fremont Club Sport. I had remembered seeing someone setting up poles and a black curtain in the studio next door. So when I began looking into pole fitness classes in early 2009, I started looking into them at Club Sport. However, those classes were no longer being offered. So I did a web search for where they might be offered in my local area. Twirly Girls popped up and I signed up for a taster class. Lo and behold, Twirly Girls was run by the same instructor I saw setting up poles at Club Sport – Bel!

How long have you been a Twirly Girl?

I have been a Twirly Girl since February 17, 2009! I remember because my first class was on my birthday and it was almost 5 months after I had my second child.

Did you pole dance before becoming a TG?

I never pole danced before Twirly Girls, unless you count the intoxicated gyrations around a pole at a club or party. LOL! Friends tried to talk me into it and tried to get me to take some classes but at the time, it still had the negative stigma of being “stripping”.

Which class(es) do you take?  Who is your instructor?

I currently only take one class, with our awesome new instructor, A.J.! Previously, I was a loyal Bel student before switching over to Grace. Unfortunately for me, I am only available to take daytime classes, which leaves me out for a lot of the other classes I’ve been dying to take. I used to take aerial silks with Sarah but she’s taking a hiatus.

Which move were you most excited to nail?

Hmmm….”nail” is such a subjective term. Haha! One comes immediately to mind – the No-Hands Cupid. It was a move on someone’s “wish list” for our workshop with Natasha Wang. So we all attempted it and I was able to do it for a couple of seconds. Shortly after that workshop, I “nailed” the move, using the tips Natasha taught us.

Have you taken any workshops?  Which was your favorite?

I’ve taken a few workshops. I hope I remember them all. I’ve taken a workshop with Natasha Wang, Alethea Austin, Sarah ‘Starlight’ Stolar (silks) and Josiah “Badazz” Grant. Hard to say which one was my favorite, really. Each one was taken at a different time in my personal journey so they are all my favorite. If I were to factor in entertainment value (I had a total blast!), I’d have to say Badazz.

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

I’ve always learned to dance barefoot with Bel. Early on, we played with heels, too. It’s fun to dance in heels (though you definitely need to adjust for the shift in your center of gravity!) but I prefer bare feet.

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

Oh, that’s a toughie! Probably Blue Jeans (Lana Del Ray) or Still With Me (Tritonal), but A.J. is introducing me to the world of dancing to faster music!

What is your guilty pleasure?

Guilty pleasure? Well, if it were simply pleasure, I would say my tending my home farm/ranch, animals and family. If it had to be guilty, I’d have to say Hard Tail! Ask Bel, she’ll know what I’m talking about. 😉

September Twirly Girl of the Month: Danielle!

How did you find Twirly Girls?

I used to work out at Club Sport Pleasanton. I had a 9 month old and had just retired from the fire service. I was looking for something fun and when Bel started teaching pole classes there – I was hooked!

How long have you been a Twirly Girl?

I have been a Twirly Girl since November 2005.

Did you pole dance before becoming a TG?

No. I have never taken any type of dancing – poor Grace and AJ have had to deal with my non-dance background, ha, ha!

Which class(es) do you take?  Who is your instructor?

I have only taken classes from Bel and Grace. Recently I have been fortunate enough to take some Monday morning classes form the amazing AJ though.

Which move were you most excited to nail?

I’m not sure if I have ever “nailed” a move. I may be one of the original Twirly Girls but you would never guess it. I’m in it for fitness and FUN!

Have you taken any workshops?  Which was your favorite?

No, no workshops yet – someday when “I’m better”. 😉

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

I used to like heels but after training with Grace this past year, I now prefer barefoot?

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

I really like Kid Rock, Aerosmith, classic rock type stuff that nobody else at the studio is into – I think I’m showing my age. 😀

What is your guilty pleasure?

Ahhh, my guilty pleasure… I dunno, I rarely get the house to myself but I would say sushi and beer on the couch watching TV with my dog and then a bath with cupcakes and champagne. I’ve gotten to do that a few times – ya, that sounds good!

August Twirly Girl of the Month: Celina!

How did you find Twirly Girls?

I luckily found Twirly Girls through the amazing Grace Garcia!

How long have you been a Twirly Girl?

I started in March of 2012.

Did you pole dance before becoming a TG?

Nooooo….I had just thought about it for awhile but was also interested in silks. I wanted to do silks for longer than pole, but found after trying both that pole was more difficult for me. I’ve been hooked from the beginning!

Which class(es) do you take?  Who is your instructor?

I alternate between Triple T’s with Bel and Tricks R for Chicks with Grace.

Which move were you most excited to nail?

Ha! Cross-ankle release. After seeing how beautifully Jenyne Butterfly does it, amongst, well, all of her moves, it was really something I wanted to nail. Funnily enough I was able to do it after listening to some Christian radio show on the the way to Twirly Girls that talked about “going into the pain”. That God was in the pain because staying comfortable all the time meant you weren’t healing or growing. That night I was so elated in an odd way I have never been, and then sort of mortified because I realized how scary that is to actually hang upside down like that. It hasn’t kept me from doing it again, of course.

Have you taken any workshops?  Which was your favorite?

I have taken one workshop with Jill Anne and hope to take many more.

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

For where I am right now in pole, I like to dance barefoot. I have never tried to dance in heels. I don’t know when I will be ready for that, but I think it looks amazing and shows such skill, balance and strength.

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

Night Light by Jessie Ware.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Oh boy…Perezhilton.com

July Twirly Girl of the Month: Yolanda!

How did you find Twirly Girls?
Through Lori Myers!
How long have you been a Twirly Girl?
Unofficially, for a few years.  I started taking workshops, attended a few parties and a taster class, but I didn’t officially start regular classes until Lori started teaching Boys, Girls and Twirls on Monday nights.  And that was nearly a year and a half ago!
Did you pole dance before becoming a TG?
Definitely not.  It wasn’t something I ever thought I could do.  It’s only from the great group of people at TG and a really supportive instructor that I made the leap to regular classes!
Which class(es) do you take?  Who is your instructor?
I take Boys Girls and Twirls on Monday night with Lori Myers!
Which move were you most excited to nail?
It sounds silly, but CLIMBING!  I was having a hard time with it, decided to work on the side climb instead and poof, suddenly I can regular climb like it’s no big thing.
Have you taken any workshops?  Which was your favorite?
I’ve taken a few, but my favorite was definitely Jamilla Deville.  She is so sweet and such a beautiful dancer, as well as a great instructor. Even though I was brand new to pole, and not your average pole dancer, she still taught me an awesome combo that I wish I could remember today!
Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?
Definitely barefoot, but the girls looks so amazing dancing in heels, I really would like to try it more often.
What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?
Between Two Points by The Glitch Mob or Closer by Kings of Leon.
What is your guilty pleasure?
Cupcakes.  😉
