January 2015 Twirly Girl of the Month: Taylor!

How did you find Twirly Girls?

I googled pole dancing studios in the Bay Area. I have always wanted to try pole dancing, and it turns out I live only a mile from the studio. I figured since I couldn’t continue to dance ballet and contemporary due to a bad knee, I might as well try it out!

How long have you been a Twirly Girl?

Coming up on one year in a few weeks!

Did you pole dance before becoming a TG?

No, just all sorts of other dancing styles throughout my life.

Which class(es) do you take? Who is your instructor?

I take Graceful Moves with Grace.

Which move were you most excited to nail?

My helicopter into invert. Its almost there!

Have you taken any workshops? Which was your favorite?

No I have not since they always seem to interfere with my work schedule.  They look really fun though!

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

Barefoot, it is more natural for me personally.

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

I don’t have on in particular, but I love dancing to Skylar Grey and my competition song “Over You”- a duet by Ingrid Michealson and Great Big World.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Taking naps. I can fall asleep any time, anywhere, and I absolutely love it.

December Twirly Girl of the Month: Ellen!

How long have you been teaching at Twirly Girls?

I’ve been teaching at TG since February of this year, and am so happy to finally have a pole HOME. And this month–December–I am celebrating 6 years of teaching pole!

How long have you been pole dancing?

I’ve been pole dancing since January of 2008, so almost 7 years. I started with a sensual dance class, where they also taught us one twirl. I was instantly hooked and haven’t looked back since.

Which move were you most excited to nail?

This goes back many years, but I think it has to be superman. I didn’t think there was any way I was getting into that position! My dear friend Freya from Brassy Butterfly in Portland gave me the cues I needed to make it happen–and I use the same ones today when I teach it. It’s one of my favorite moves to teach, too. I love to see how excited students get when they first do it!

Which move is your nemesis?

Knee hold. It’s not really a nemesis; it’s something I flat-out refuse to do. The pain!! Each time I’ve tried, I’ve had a bone bruise for months. SO not worth it.

Which pros and workshops have been your favorite?

My favorite hands-down has always been Marlo. I’ve done probably a dozen workshops, classes, and privates with her, and I always take away so many interesting transitions and moves that work for me and my students. Having no formal dance training, I also really love learning choreographed routines and transitions that bring different styles to the piece: Phoenix Kazree, Michelle Stanek, and Sergia are some favorite teachers that come to mind.

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

I definitely prefer heels. My style has always been slinky sexy–my nickname IS Dr. Sultry after all–and heels just go so well with that. I’ve been recovering from a torn meniscus in my knee for about 14 months, and am just now starting to be able to wear heels again without pain.

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

I have three favorites that have always gotten me going, for years. Slow Dancing in a Burning Room (although I HATE John Mayer usually!), and 2,3,4 by Joneine Zapata. And the first song I ever performed to always makes me move–So Hott by Kid Rock!

What is your guilty pleasure?

I have to pick one?! OK. Chocolate. I eat good, organic very dark chocolate every single day. But I’ll eat any chocolate: See’s assortments, crappy Russell Stover, you name it!

October 2014 Twirly Girl of the Month: Kaleena!

How did you find Twirly Girls?

Through my internet friend, yelp! It was to get my “good girl” coworker to come out of her shell before she had to leave for her nursing program in Boston.

How long have you been a Twirly Girl?

I’ve been in and out of it, but a smidge over a year!

Did you pole dance before becoming a TG?

Noooo, but I was dabbling in other things like hip hop, jazz, ballet, tap, and contemporary.

Which class(es) do you take?  Who is your instructor?

I take AJ’s ‘Tricks and Inverts Intermediate’. Then when I’m not tied up on the weekends, I take Ellen’s ‘Pole Flow’ and Grace’s ‘Graceful Moves’. J I would loooove to take more classes if my body wouldn’t take so darn long to recover.

Which move were you most excited to nail?

I was always excited and nervous to nail any and every move thrown at me. Thinking back on it, I’ve come a long way with my little chicken arms, pole jumping, and bruising like tofu (tofu doesn’t actually bruise). ANYWAYS, I was more surprised if anything when I solo-dolo landed in my Superman.

Have you taken any workshops?  Which was your favorite?

I have! AJ’s ‘Aerial Silks’ and Seanmichael’s ‘Spin Pole’. I don’t think I’ll ever have a favorite – everything I have learned and will learn are invaluable.

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

Barefoot and socks for sliding across the room @_@

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

I loooove the World of Color music/soundtrack, but that’s about 30 minutes long and it’s more gooby dancing. You know what’s silly though? I used to love the song “Sliding Down the Pole” by E-40. ‘There she go sliding down the pole. One dollar bills coming out her asshole.’ Who would’ve guessed I’d actually be sliding down several years later? HA

What is your guilty pleasure?

Sushi and bobaaaaaaaa. Feed me and I’ll love you forever :3

September 2014 Twirly Girl of the Month: Goldie!

How did you find Twirly Girls?

YELP! My New Years resolution was to do something fun and active. I looked up dance studios in my area and saw Twirly Girls. I took a chance, signed up for the month, and now I’m hooked on pole.

How long have you been a Twirly Girl?

Since January 2014 so about 7 months. I’m so close to becoming an OTG!

Did you pole dance before becoming a TG?

I tried it once for a bachelorette party that I was invited to last minute. This was long long ago.

Which class(es) do you take?  Who is your instructor?

Monday morning Pole Flow with Ellen and Wednesday morning Total Twirl with AJ. I love them both.

Which move were you most excited to nail?

SUPERMAN but I’m still working on it because I can only do one per day and it hurts.

Have you taken any workshops?  Which was your favorite?

Hell yea.  Pole Flow with Ellen, Stiletto 101 with Jade, Spinning Pole with Diana and Seanmichael, Fly Gym with Ginger, Beauty and the Beat with Chalese, SWAG with Roz. My 2 favorites are twerkin with Chalese and Roz.

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

Barefoot for now. I only danced in heels a few times but I would like to do both.

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

There is a song I would like to dance to but I haven’t tried it yet. I’ll let you know how that works out 😛

What is your guilty pleasure?
BEER! I am a huge beer snob. I love supporting local brews especially when I travel, I always get beer on tap and refuse to pay for overpriced bottled beer at a bar/restaurant/event when I can buy it cheaper at the grocery store. And for fun I love Disneyland and SF Giants baseball.

August Twirly Girl of the Month: Jenny!

jennyHow did you find Twirly Girls?

A friend introduced me to Lori (Myers), and she introduced me to the studio back in January 2011.

How long have you been a Twirly Girl?

Tricky question for me! I dropped into a few classes and took some workshops between 2011 and 2012, but I’ve been consistently enrolled in classes at TG since July 2013.

Did you pole dance before becoming a TG?

I took classes at S Factor in SF for about 1 ½ years, but I consider that to be more feminine movement and free dance than pole. When I went to Pole Convention in July 2011, I was amazed and completely inspired to see what others were doing with pole fitness. I consider that to be my true starting point. I’ve taken classes at lots of studios in the Bay Area, and I picked up lyra (aerial hoop) this year too.

Which class(es) do you take? Who is your instructor?

I take classes weekly at TG with Sean Michael and Ellen. I am constantly learning and really enjoy the different dynamics of both classes (i.e., teachers, style, classmates). I also love taking classes with all the other TG instructors.

Which move were you most excited to nail?

Tough question! I get so excited about learning new tricks, and I’m always posting the newest tricks I’ve learned on Instagram. I was so stoked to do a titanic (without hands) the first time, and that’s my go-to pic when friends ask to see a pole photo. Now I really want an iron-X and a dead lift.

Have you taken any workshops? Which was your favorite?

Another tough question!! I’ve taken lots of workshops. I think it’s important for a number of reasons. They’re all good in their own unique ways. A couple of my absolute favorites have been Michelle Shimmy (always a blast!) and Sasja Lee.

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

Both! I used to dance in heels consistently. I’ve moved toward dancing barefoot in class, but I wear heels when I’m dancing at home by myself. Random fact: I also like to wear my dancing heels while cleaning my house… It makes me feel like I’m working my leg muscles and core balance and adds a little fun into an otherwise mundane task!

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

Revolution by Diplo – I love anything he does, and this song just resonates with me right now.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Leggings. Especially my new Black Milk leggings!! I just can’t help myself lately… They’re so cozy for warm ups. And, yes, I’m wearing a pair as I type this!!

July 2014 Twirly Girl of the Month: Jaana!

How did you find Twirly Girls?

I found twirly girls through my best friend Karlai. She told me that she and her daughter Amber were going to take this new class Diana ( her niece) was teaching.. So I said I would take it also. We thought we’d do one month but became totally hooked! So fun!!

How long have you been a Twirly Girl?

I’ve been a twirly girl since Diana’s first class. Two and a half years I think?

Did you pole dance before becoming a TG?

No, I never did pole dance before Twirly Girls.

Which class(es) do you take? Who is your instructor?

I take Wed night Dizzy Divas with Diana, she’s an awesome teacher and class is so fun with her and everyone in it!!

Which move were you most excited to nail?

The move I was most excited about was climbing to the top..and the pretzel which I’m sure will never happen again. Lol.

Have you taken any workshops? Which was your favorite?

No, haven’t taken any workshops but hope to do so!

Do you like to dance in heels or barefoot?

I like to dance barefoot.

What is your favorite song to dance to (at this moment)?

Favorite song to dance to at the moment is Katy Perry’s dark horse.

What is your guilty pleasure?

My guilty pleasure is eating ice cream while reading in bed…

Blue Light Specials

I’ll do it MYYYYYYY WAYYYYY…..

I get bombarded weekly from various groups wanting me to run a special through them. When I tell them I’m not interested, they reply back “What, you don’t want to triple your business!”  Well, unfortunately if I were to triple my business, that would mean one thing: I would have to fill up my classes to the brink! Multiple people on a pole, all trying to get their turn, instructors moving from pole to pole making sure everyone is using proper form. Is it worth it??? Hell no…not to me…yes of course the money would be great but at what risk? I’m a Group Exercise Instructor and I can teach a very large class. But Pole is different. I think its very important to be able to monitor each student properly. I think that’s impossible when you pack them in. But besides that, do you really get to know your students. I mean really get to know them.

Well I love the fact that we all get to know each other and become friends. I love to see students try new classes, new instructors, meet their fellow Twirlers! I don’t plan to do a mass special, but I am going to do something that will be fun, and great way to try other classes, etc…

I’m calling it the Blue Lite Special. Yep, sound familiar???

When there are openings in a class I’ll post a Blue Lite Special on our Facebook page. There may be 4 openings, there may be 1, the cost will be $10! Can’t beat that now, can ya? First come, first score! This will give some of you a chance to try something new at a nice discount. Plus its gonna be fun to see where the Blue Lite pops up! I will run this through the summer. There is no limit to how many you grab. You MUST be signed up for a regular class in order to qualify for the Blue Lite Special. You will be able to register under Workshops in our online registration. Once the number is filled, there will be no more options to get in. Again. we keep our classes fairly small. I am NOT doing this to stack my classes but to give some of you a chance to get into a class that may have room that session!

Keep your eyes open. Who knows when I decide to post one!
